Meanwhile, his son Chandy Oommen won with a record majority in the Pudupally by-election held following the demise of former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. Chandi Oommen remained ahead till the last stage, gaining a strong lead that the opposing candidates might not overcome even at one stage of the counting of votes. UDF retained Pudupally with a majority of 37,719 votes.
Out of total 182 booths, LDF candidate Jake C. Thomas got a lead in only one booth. Jake got a lead of 15 votes in booth number 153 of Meenadam panchayat. Even his own playground, Manarkadu, was beaten by Jake. With this, Jake Thomas suffered a hat-trick defeat in Pudupally.
Meanwhile, BJP candidate Lijin Lal was not even in the picture. Left leaders accused the BJP of handing over the votes to the UDF.
