At the Women’s World Cup final between England and Spain, many pubs in Great Britain were only allowed to serve beers in the second half because of the early kick-off. The industry is now calling for the law to be relaxed. Greater legal flexibility “to celebrate important social and sporting events” is important for the long-term economic sustainability of pubs, the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) emphasized on Tuesday.
According to the BBPA, sales during Sunday’s game increased by as much as 28 percent. However, the businesses might have made even more money if they had had permission to serve by the 11:00 a.m. (local time) kick-off at the latest. The current law from 2003 is far too strict and prevents short-term special measures, the association criticized. Many pubs do not have a morning license.
British pubs have been under a lot of pressure for years. Reasons are high taxes, the smoking ban and changed drinking habits. Recently, the sharply increased costs for energy, personnel and raw materials due to high inflation have had an additional impact. Hundreds of pubs have to close every year.
