Public transport and ticket sales for the Capital of Culture

The Salzkammergut, a rural region, is the European Capital of Culture this year. Increased frequency and an improved “leisure ticket” should still make traveling via public transport attractive. This is recommended for the opening ceremony in Bad Ischl anyway, as the city center is closed to traffic on Saturday. The predicted 10,000 to 15,000 visitors can expect a colorful program; admission is free on the opening weekend with the exception of one operetta performance.

From Saturday 7 a.m. to Sunday 2 a.m. Bad Ischl bans motorized traffic from the city center. Residents and suppliers are allowed to enter the city until 12 p.m. on Saturday – but only with an authorization card and only via a single route, Götzstrasse. The main bridge (Elisabeth Bridge) and the esplanade remain open to traffic.

If you arrive by train at the opening, the first lab station awaits you at the train station: the “Wirtshauslabor” will be stationed there from January 17th to 22nd. Content is then available a few minutes’ walk away in the drinking hall, where there is an information point. There are several options for purchasing event tickets, both online and analogue.

Admission is largely free on the opening weekend. You can find out what the ticket prices are for an event at a later date in the Capital of Culture’s event calendar www.salzkammergut-2024.at/veranstaltungen. You can also buy tickets online there, also at www.salzkammergut.at/tickets. You can also order them by email at tickets@salzkammergut.at or by phone at +43 6132 27757. Tickets can also be purchased at the Bad Ischl Tourism Association’s sales point in the Trinkhalle (Auböckplatz 5). You can often get tickets from the respective project partners – festivals, theaters, etc. – and, if tickets are still available, at the box office. Discounts are available for schoolchildren, students and apprentices under the age of 26, as well as civilian and military servants, the unemployed, people with disabilities, with the Kulturcard 2024 and for Raiffeisenbank customers.

In order to enable public travel to the events of the Cultural Capital Year, the Upper Austrian Transport Association (OÖVV) has expanded its offering. The “Freizeit-Ticket” – a day ticket for local public transport in Upper Austria, which allows up to two adults and four children under 15 years of age to travel – is valid this year throughout the entire Salzkammergut, including the parts of Salzburg and Styria. In addition, the price was reduced from 24.90 euros to 19.90 euros and the validity was extended until 3 a.m. the next day.

You can also use the Salzkammergut shuttle. This micro-public transport service runs on 21 routes, daily from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. every hour. Reservations should be made one hour before departure, or one day before for groups. The prices per person or family and route are in the single-digit euro range. Owners of a “leisure ticket” or climate ticket receive a 50 percent discount in the Upper Austrian part.

With the timetable change on December 10, 2023, OÖVV and ÖBB have increased the frequency. On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, additional connections run on the Salzkammergutbahn between Attnang-Puchheim and Stainach-Irdning, including connecting connections to Gmunden and Vorchdorf with the Traunseetram. The evening offering on the Western Railway line between Linz and Attnang-Puchheim has also been expanded. New night routes have been introduced in regional bus transport from Laakirchen via Gmunden to Bad Ischl and back, so that you can still leave Bad Ischl in public at 11.30 p.m., for example following attending evening events.
