Public servants in Brazil will be able to arrive later at work to watch the matches of the national team in the Women’s World Cup, the government announced Tuesday, a measure previously reserved for the men’s competition.

“It is a measure of fairness, guaranteeing male and female servers who wish to watch the games the same right they had during the men’s soccer World Cup,” said the Minister of Management and Innovation in Public Services, Esther Dweck, quoted in a release.

In the first phase of the tournament, which starts on Thursday in Australia and New Zealand, the ‘Seleçao’ will play their matches at 6:00 and 7:00 in the morning, Colombian time, one more hour in Brazil.

“On game days in Brazil, officials may report (to their workplace) up to two hours after the final whistle,” the note indicates.

Thus, on Monday, in the premiere of Brazil against Panama in the Australian city of Brisbane, public employees at the federal level will be able to start their workday at noon.

But the statement specifies that “the hours not worked must be compensated later in the second semester.”

Due to the expected absence of numerous officials next Monday morning, the Central Bank decided to postpone the publication of the data from its weekly Focus survey, which provides forecasts on economic growth and inflation, for one day.

Work schedules, both in the public and private sectors, are usually accommodated during the men’s soccer World Cup, when the entire country comes to a standstill to watch the matches of the five-time world champions.

But it is the first time that the federal government adopts this measure for its officials in the Women’s Cup.

Several companies decided to follow suit, such as the Pay Less pharmacy network or the manufacturer of industrial breads Bimbo, which explained, in statements sent to AFP, that they had proposed to their employees alternative times and spaces to watch the Brazil matches in their Workplace.

The Grupo Boticario cosmetics company will also let its employees watch the ‘Canarinha’ games, as they did during the previous Women’s World Cup, in 2019.
