The Haravgi newspaper, published in Güney, wrote that the Chairman of the Parliamentary Education Committee, Pavlos Milonas, said in a statement the previous day that 90 percent of public schools comply with the earthquake resistance standards made in 1994.
Regarding private schools, Milonas noted that inspections should be carried out in buildings that are often used as houses or opened using old buildings.
Pointing out that the appropriation for technical services of the Ministry of Education should be increased in the budget, sMilonas said that a budget of 1.5 billion Euros was allocated to the ministry and 45 million Euros was given for technical services.
The newspaper wrote that DISI Deputy Yorgos Karullas said that the alarm bells were ringing in Cyprus due to the earthquakes in Turkey and that the earthquake resistance standards of the schools were a matter of protecting human life.
