Public Prosecutor summons González Urrutia for Monday for alleged “conspiracy”

Caracas, Aug 24 (EFE).- The Public Ministry summoned the flag bearer of the majority opposition, Edmundo González Urrutia, for next Monday for aan investigation against him, due to an alleged “conspiracy” and other crimes associated with the accusation of electoral fraud made by the anti-Chavez movement, reported this Saturday the attorney general, Tarek William Saab.

According to the summons, the opposition leader must appear before a “fiscal representation” of the MP in Caracas on August 26 at 10:00 local time (14:00 GMT), as part of an investigation into the “alleged commission of crimes of usurpation of functions, forgery of public documents, incitement to disobedience of laws, computer crimes, criminal association and conspiracy.”

The Attorney General’s Office is investigating the website where the main opposition coalition – the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) – claims to have published “83.5% of the minutes” of the July 28 presidential elections, which, according to this anti-Chavez sector, show the victory of its standard-bearer, despite the fact that the National Electoral Council (CNE) proclaimed Nicolás Maduro the winner.

“Please appear before this fiscal representation of the Public Prosecutor’s Office (…) on August 26, 2024 at 10:00 a.m., in order to give an interview in relation to the facts that this office is investigating related to the publication and maintenance of the website https://resultadosconvzla.com,” the summons reads.

On Friday, Saab announced that González Urrutia would be summoned to “speak, in a consequential and successive manner, about his responsibility before, during and after July 28, for his contumacy, his disobedience to the authorities.”

In a speech broadcast on state channel VTV, the official said he hopes the opposition “will make statements about his authorship” in the publication of these data, which – he stressed – “has usurped” a task “that only corresponds” to the National Electoral Council (CNE), which has not yet published the disaggregated results confirming Maduro’s announced victory at the polls.

The prosecutor also said that the leader of the PUD “does not show his face” and “no one knows where he is,” referring to González Urrutia’s decision to remain “in shelter” in the face of threats from Chavismo, which has called for jail time for him and his main supporter, María Corina Machado.

The prosecutor’s announcement came a day after the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) confirmed Maduro’s victory, which has been rejected by numerous countries that have asked the Venezuelan authorities to publish the disaggregated results, as established in the schedule.
