Public Ministry will charge the mayor of Maracaibo

The mayor of Maracaibo, the opposition Rafael Ramírez Colina, arrested on Tuesday, will be accused of “serious irregular acts” related to corruption, the Public Ministry (MP) announced this Wednesday, October 2.

The agency appointed a national prosecutor specialized in corruption to process several complaints against Ramírez Colina and other officials of said mayor’s office.

“The case will be presented in court by citizen Rafael Ramírez Colina, mayor of the aforementioned municipality, and other collaborators to be charged for the serious irregular acts attributed to them,” reads the MP’s Instagram post.

Although the agency did not offer the names of the other mayoral officials arrested for corruption, it stated that it collected enough evidence to incriminate those investigated.

For its part, the Maracaibo Mayor’s Office denounced in a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) that the arrest of its officials was carried out “without justification.”

The pronouncement of the Mayor’s Office of Maracaibo

According to the Mayor’s Office of Maracaibo, the arrest of Rafael Ramírez Colina It took place on Tuesday, October 1, in the afternoon. His arrest was carried out along with other officials, although they did not specify the number of detainees.

“We ask for the immediate release of Mayor Rafael Ramírez Colina, respect for the institutions, the spaces of public powers, and we advocate for the well-being and protection of the more than 8 thousand public servants of Maracaibo who continue to work for the city,” he wrote in the publication.

Despite the arrest of the municipal authority, the Mayor’s Office of Maracaibo assured citizens that it will continue with its daily work in the 18 parishes that make up this municipality.

“The Mayor’s Office of Maracaibo continues to serve the city with a deep humanist character and in defense of citizen rights, acting with transparency and accountability,” he added.

For its part, Primero Justicia, the party to which Mayor Rafael Ramírez Colina belongs, rated his arrest at X as “an attack on the Marabinos who elected him.” Furthermore, the political organization demanded his immediate release.

Actions against other public officials of Maracaibo

After hearing the news of the arrest of the mayor of Maracaibo, journalist Jhorman Cruz reported in X that officials of the Bolivarian National Intelligence Service (Sebin) are in front of the house of Luis Alberto Buchi Martínez, who is also a member of Primero Justicia.

Buchi Martínez served as director of inter-institutional relations of the Maracaibo Mayor’s Office until 2023.

So far, the aurinegra awning has not commented on this fact and it is unknown if the officials have any search or arrest warrant against Buchi Martínez.
