Public Defense opens headquarters in Misiones to facilitate free access to justice

Asuncion, IP Agency.- The Ministry of Public Defense opened its headquarters in the city of San Ignacio Guazú, department of Misiones, on Friday, with the presence of the President of the Republic, Santiago Peña. This is with the commitment to facilitate free access to justice for the most vulnerable sectors of Paraguayan society.

The event was also attended by ministers of the Supreme Court of Justice, the head of the Ministry of Public Defense, Javier Dejesús Esquivel, parliamentarians, regional and district authorities.

The new Public Defense space will operate in one of the modules located within the well-known “Casa de Indios”, Cultural Heritage of the city, protected by Law No. 5621/20016 and located on the streets, Cerro Corá between San Roque González de Santa Cruz and Marcial de Lorenzana.

This architectural heritage was a building constructed during the Jesuit missions in the 17th century and, according to its history, it housed people belonging to indigenous communities for a long time.

The Public Defender’s Office will open its doors to provide guidance, assistance and representation to the inhabitants of the districts of San Ignacio, Santa Rosa and Santa María, registered as the municipalities with the largest number of inhabitants in Misiones, with more than 60,000 people.

Due to the age of the building, the Casa de Indios was restored by the Municipality in 2022 and is currently valued as a cultural heritage of San Ignacio Guazú.
