DPR RI Speaker Puan Maharani emphasized the importance of self-reflection in the implementation of the 2024 Election.
In his speech, he highlighted the various challenges faced during the election, underlining that the democratic process must be a critique and self-criticism for all parties involved.
“The 2024 election has ended, the people have exercised their sovereign rights. This must be a criticism and self-criticism for all of us,” said Puan in a Joint Session of the Indonesian House of Representatives and the Indonesian Regional Representative Council (DPD RI) held at the Nusantara Building, Parliament Complex, Senayan, Jakarta, Friday (16/8).
In her speech, Puan also congratulated President-elect Prabowo Subianto and Vice President-elect Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who will be inaugurated in October.
He also expressed his appreciation to the elected legislative members for the 2024-2029 period.

This moment was also attended by President Joko Widodo, Vice President Ma’ruf Amin, and the ranks of ministers of the Advanced Indonesia Cabinet.
Also present were several former presidents and vice presidents, including the 5th President of the Republic of Indonesia Megawati Soekarnoputri and the 6th President of the Republic of Indonesia Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, as well as a number of leaders of high state institutions.
One of the important points conveyed by Puan was regarding the quality of democracy which is not only measured by voter participation, but also by freedom and honesty in the election process.

“A quality election is not only seen from people’s participation, but also from the people’s freedom to choose without coercion and fear,” said Puan.
Furthermore, Puan reminded that the election is an opportunity for the people to exercise their sovereignty. Therefore, she emphasized the importance of maintaining the principles of democracy that are fair and free from all forms of pressure. “In the election, the people should be the winners: winning because they can exercise their sovereign rights freely, honestly, and fairly,” she added.
This trial is also an important moment ahead of the simultaneous Regional Head Elections which will be held in November.

Puan hopes that the experience from the 2024 Election can be used as evaluation material to ensure that the next democratic process runs better and with integrity.
Puan’s emphasis on the importance of introspection and improving the quality of democracy reflects a commitment to continue improving the democratic process in Indonesia.
He ended his speech by calling on all parties to maintain and create a democracy that is increasingly advanced and makes the nation’s life more intelligent, not just by electing leaders, but also by building a dignified civilization.
Thus, the 2024 Joint Session of the DPR-DPD RI is not only a ceremonial event, but also an important reflection for the future of Indonesian democracy. (Z-10)
