PTB Success in Brussels and Wallonia: Analysis from RTL Info 1 p.m.

This Friday, we revealed the figures from our latest Grand Baromètre RTL info / Ipsos / Le Soir. With one observation: the PTB scores big in Brussels, but falls off the podium in Wallonia. How to explain it? This Saturday, on RTL info 1 p.m., ULB political scientist Pascal Delwit delivered his analysis.

“In Brussels, they were assertive on two issues which speak to a part of Brussels society. On the one hand, a very pro-Palestinian position on the ongoing conflict. And on the other hand, a very assertive position on the question of housing, which is very important for the people of Brussels. There was perhaps an additional echo to their presence on their land and to their usual discourse. On the other hand, on the Walloon side, it is possible that a more defensive, which we have observed over the last 3 weeks on certain social issues and on the conflict in the Middle East, this may have diverted part of the electorate who might vote for them.”

Another observation: on the Flemish side, Vlaams Belang is in the lead, followed by the N-VA. The party of Alexander De Croo, the Prime Minister, is in free fall while he continues to score well.

“In general, there is sometimes a disconnect between the popularity of a person and that of their party. We experienced this with Yves Leterme and the CD&V, or with Kris Peeters and the CD&V. In fact, Alexander De Croo keeps a very satisfactory popularity rating in the three regions. But his party is in turmoil. There have been two recent ministerial resignations. The Open VLD is having difficulty finding a singular position in the center-right landscape in Flanders, stuck between the Vlaams Belang, the N-VA and the CD&V. For several years, the party has not managed to find its place. The internal crisis has somewhat accelerated the turmoil around this political group.”
