INDONESIA is grappling with an ever-increasing waste crisis. In fact, Indonesia is one of the countries that contributes the most waste in the world.

According to data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry (KLHK), and based on data in the National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) in 2023, Indonesia has produced 18 million tons of waste and 19% of it is plastic waste.

Responding to this urgent environmental challenge, PT Sinar Sosro, in 2023, initiated the Dauri Movement (Recycling for the Nation), which is an ongoing movement to increase awareness of the importance of recycling beverage packaging among Indonesian consumers.

Starting Wednesday (13/3), the Dauri Movement will be implemented in 100 HokBen restaurants spread nationwide. Through this collaboration, PT Sinar Sosro, HokBen, and Tetra Pak, invite HokBen restaurant consumers to care more regarding depositing ‘single-use beverage, food and cutlery packaging’ to then be recycled into items that can be reused by the community.

PT Sinar Sosro Chief Marketing Officer Sabrina Kharisanti expressed her optimism regarding this partnership.

“Sosro is committed to actively participating in efforts to reduce and sort post-consumer beverage and food packaging. Together with HokBen and Tetra Pak, we are collaborating and extending the reach of the Dauri Movement in increasing public awareness and instilling responsible and sustainable waste management practices,” said Sabrina .

As a form of this commitment, PT Sinar Sosro, HokBen, and Tetra Pak started an innovative approach to overcome the waste problem by installing dropboxes made from recycled polymer and aluminum (PolyAl) materials from used drinking cardboard packaging. All collected used drinking cartons will be sorted at the HokBen facility before being sent to the recycling factory.

“Sosro has been our partner for many years. Through the Dauri Movement, HokBen wants to foster sustainable waste handling and management habits among our customers. “As a restaurant that serves up to 50,000 customers every day, HokBen can make a real contribution in supporting the government’s efforts to reduce waste more broadly,” said Sugiri Willim, Marketing Director of PT Eka Bogainti, the company that owns and manages all HokBen outlets spread across Indonesia.

The partnership with the Dauri Movement encourages HokBen customer engagement through innovative incentives, namely QR code-based appreciation. Customers who purchase HokBen take away and dine-in packages/menus can scan the QR code to register, record drink and food packaging, as well as single-use cutlery deposited, and collect points.

PT Sinar Sosro, HokBen, and Tetra Pak have prepared appreciation for customers who reach a certain number of points and can be exchanged for merchandise, such as notebooks, holders for smartphones made from recycled materials, and HokBen menu packages.

Tetra Pak Indonesia is proud to be one of the main partners of the Dauri Movement.

“At Tetra Pak, we believe that achieving a sustainable food packaging future requires a full value chain approach to circularity. “We believe collaborative initiatives such as the DAURI Movement where various industry partners come together with the common goal of taking proactive action in recycling, will contribute to the national ambition in achieving a low-carbon circular economy,” said Tetra Pak Indonesia Director Tommy Srihartoyo Soetoyo.

“Together with the Dauri Movement, PT Sinar Sosro will continue to invite partners to work together to support the principles of reduce, reuse and recycle launched by the Indonesian government. As well as participating and playing an active role in better waste management. “for a brighter future for the Indonesian people and the world and we believe that to be able to maintain business existence, the Company needs to implement the principles of sustainable development,” concluded Sabrina.
