The Faculty of Medicine of the Autonomous University of Coahuila (UAdeC) will once once more apply a psychometric exam to applicants seeking to enter the career, to choose the best profiles and reduce the dropout rate, since it is one of the most demanding careers, which requires the right students to meet the demands of the profession, since they are subjected to high stress and anxiety loads.
Miguel Ángel Padilla Gámez, director of the Faculty of Medicine, pointed out that this type of evaluation was applied approximately 8 years ago and they plan to recover it and integrate it into the next entrance exams. Furthermore, per student it would only involve regarding 50 pesos more, but the benefit would be very great in the selection of the profiles required by the profession, and a company specialized in it would participate in the application.

“Our work linked to life is of great responsibility, it requires a well-defined vocation to be able to face with less damage to our personality those types of circumstances, where on a daily basis we can be faced between life and death.”
“We witness the most important moments of human beings, when they arrive here and when they leave. This requires a specific personality and behavior, a very defined capacity for resilience, a vocation for service and dedication to humanity, which is why we are fighting for a psychometric entrance exam to be done, not to remove people, but to better choose the ones people, who have the profile and who suffer less in their process.”
There are young people who may have a superior intellectual capacity, pass the exam, but their psychological structure and professional profile does not allow for that path, so they are going to suffer and suffer from anxiety or stress, he indicated.
“While we are authorized to develop the psychometric exam to improve the selection of applicants, we have taken on the task of designing resilience, conflict management and stress workshops among students. There is an interesting study that talks regarding around 15 to 20 percent (with some disorder of that type) but it may be the tip of the iceberg. It was applied years ago and that was noticeable in the impact of situations like those mentioned to us.”
In past years, people who sought to enter the Faculty and passed the three exams: the basic exam, the medical knowledge exam and the psychometric exam, had better educational profiles, a lower dropout rate, greater achievement and fewer psychosomatic problems.
“It is a screening test for vocations and personality, which profiles us towards a student who has in his emotional and psychological characteristics the predisposition to serve in the area of health.”
For now, the failure and dropout rate is relatively low on campus, as it does not exceed 10 percent and with the evaluation that percentage would be reduced.
