PSYCHEWORK
Spark Of Hope
(Power Metal | Progressive Metal)

Label: Heavy Cost
Format: (LP)

Release: 29.09.2023

A whole five years left us PSYCHEWORK now waiting for their third album “Spark Of Hope”. After a terrific debut called “The Dragon’s Year” and the no less strong successor “Karelian Hills” (2018), it is the singer Antony Parviainen, who once was with this damn strong piece of power metal MACHINE MEN was able to cause a stir, was finally able to receive the necessary recognition.

Once considered a kind of new Bruce Dickinson, Antony was already able to inspire a wider audience with MACHINE MEN until the plug was pulled in 2011 after just three albums. With PSYCHEWORK the Finn is as powerful and creative as ever.

A sometimes bombastic, sometimes epic, but always impressive album between power, prog, symphonic and even more, that is “Spark Of Hope”. The Finns always manage to score points with theatrical singing and choirs, successful orchestration, delicate keys and great riff work. Despite a certain complexity, the song itself as well as a certain catchiness are not ignored. And even if the fat riffs of “COTS”, the dramatic orchestration of “Damage All Done” or the beautiful melodies of the dark rock “Shape Of A Ghost” stand out, Antony still reigns supreme over all these great songs.

The man controls his voice wonderfully, going from high Dickinson siren screams to haunting chants to deep regions. A short shout can also happen, while the instrumental section creates a violent atmosphere that almost tends towards symphonic black metal. This happened in the aforementioned opener. You show more sensitivity with the successful piano and solemn vocals, whereas “Interstellar” is a catchy banger and is best suited for beginners.

But what am I talking about – this little masterpiece should be experienced and enjoyed in one go anyway. PSYCHEWORK deliver a late and absolutely justified candidate for the Power Metal Album of the Year. Creative, profound, dark and yet with a lot of power and verve, the Finns deliver a well thought-out and entertaining work that will convince fans of Finnish power metal.
