PSV puts FC Volendam aside with large numbers after a strong second half

On paper, PSV faced a simple task. The leader visiting Volendam, that could hardly go wrong. It didn’t go wrong either, but what the Eindhoven team showed in the first half was certainly not convincing. After the 1-1 halftime score, PSV rolled over the relegation candidate. With the 1-5 win, PSV continues its long undefeated streak.

In the first minute, PSV, where Joey Veerman had just returned to the starting line-up against his old club, was sleeping on the field. FC Volendam started strongly and through a well-run attack the ball ended up at the feet of defender George Cox. He submitted, after which Jordan Teze outwitted his own goalkeeper, although his teammate Andre Ramalho was also there for a while.

Opportunities PSV
That was a shock for PSV, who immediately went in search of the equalizer. Within ten minutes they had a number of good chances. Teze curled a free kick wide and the other back, Sergino Dest, hit the FC Volendam keeper. After 13 minutes, Ismail Saibari scored his team to make it 1-1. The Moroccan international broke free with a clever body movement and scored with his left foot.

However, it was FC Volendam with the greatest chance of a goal. The lightning-fast Zach Booth left the Eindhoven defense behind him, but stranded on goalkeeper Walter Benítez. The American hit the post on the rebound.

The pace at which PSV played was too slow to really make it difficult for the home team. Very little worked, especially on the wings. Only shortly before half time did Hirving Lozano appear in front of the Volendam goal. His shot flew over the intersection. Shortly before, the disappointing Johan Bakayoko had already shot far over.

Much better second half
Trainer Peter Bosz will undoubtedly have been very clear at halftime, because his team was very different on the field in the second half than the first 45 minutes. FC Volendam was immediately put under pressure. This soon resulted in a goal by Jerdy Schouten, the second goal this season by the controlling midfielder.

FC Volendam found it increasingly difficult with the leader and had to limit themselves to defending. PSV missed several opportunities, so that it remained somewhat exciting. The decision was made fifteen minutes before the end when Teze scored the 1-3. Teze showed in this match that he is not only a reliable back, but also that he is becoming increasingly important in football. Five minutes later, substitute Ricardo Pepi also handed in his calling card. Keeper Mio Backhaus had to fish for the fourth time with a flaming shot.

Good substitutions
Another substitute, Isaac Babadi. hurt FC Volendam even more. On the advice of another substitute, Patrick van Aanholt, he set the final score at 1-5. And so PSV still won by a large margin, something it did not seem like in the first half.
