PSG’s Lack of Response Puts Lee Kang-in’s Military Service at Stake: Asian Games Update

Five days before its entry into the running, South Korea has no further news from PSG, which must confirm whether it agrees to release – or not – Lee Kang-in (22 years old), for the Asian Games ( from September 19 to October 8). For the international, it is an opportunity to escape military service.

South Korean U21 football coach Hwang Sun-hong said on Thursday he was “disappointed” by the lack of clarity from Paris Saint-Germain on the release of attacking midfielder Lee Kang-in, a few days before opening of the Asian Games in China (September 19 to October 8). Players selected for this competition must be 20 years old or younger, with the exception of three wildcards. “PSG was supposed to give us a response around September 13. However, we have not received any official response to date,” the coach of the South Korean team told the press.

Lee Kang-in, who joined PSG from Spanish club Mallorca this summer for a fee of 22 million euros, was ruled out for four weeks last month with a thigh injury. Hwang Sun-hong said the 22-year-old was now “largely recovered”, but did not know when he would rejoin the squad. “I have been in personal contact with Kang-in and he wants to join us as soon as possible,” Hwang said. “But our discussions with PSG regarding the timetable for his arrival do not seem to be progressing, so I am disappointed.”

An opportunity for Lee Kang-in to avoid two years of military service

The Asian Games, which will be held in Hangzhou, China, are not part of the official calendar of the International Federation (Fifa), like the Olympic football tournament. Thus, PSG is not obliged to release its player, but for Lee Kang-in it is a question of escaping the 21-month military service, obligatory for all Koreans before the age of 28. However, shining in this competition allows it to be reduced to just three weeks: the government rewards gold medalists at the Asian Games and all medalists at the Olympic Games. Son Heung-min, winner of this competition in 2019 at the age of 26, “saved” his career by winning these Games.

South Korea, which is aiming for a third consecutive gold medal, will face Kuwait on Tuesday for its entry into the running.
