PSG – Often discreet, sometimes eruptive: the hidden side of Luis Campos

From PSG-Lille this weekend, we will first remember an avalanche of goals and a scenario eligible for the Césars, which ended up devoting the capital club thanks to a sublime free kick from Lionel Messi. But we will remember almost as much this incredible last quarter of an hour, during which Luis Campos shouted in the Parisian technical area, giving instructions to the players, attacking the referees, in short, officiating almost in place of Christophe Galtier.

Di Maria: ‘PSG gave all this power to Mbappé by having the best player in history’

The many images of the Portuguese, very vehement throughout the end of the match this Sunday, will not earn him sanctions from the LFP. But they concluded an already particularly turbulent week for him at PSG, which he had started with the revelation of a big altercation between him and Neymar, following the rout once morest Monaco on February 11 (3-1). In one week, it’s the whole image of a personality reputed to be discreet, calm, on the edge of invisibility, who took a hit; however, Campos is not at his first attempt.

With the referees, it became tragic

This sometimes overflowing desire to be involved in sport, the Portuguese leader first gets it from his passion for the field. A former coach in Portugal, Campos is known to take very seriously the trajectories of the clubs where they pass and the players they meet. Ricardo Silva, who evolved under his orders at Boavista, paints his portrait for ZeroZero: “He is a man passionate regarding football and with great knowledge of the game. […] He was very dedicated to his players.”

Amândio Barreiras, whose assistant Luis Campos was at Sporting Espinho in 1988-1989, goes a little further. “He was a passionate young man, on edgehe testifies for ZeroZero also. He might be angry with the referees, because he hated injustice. It was becoming tragic.”

But how far will Monaco go?

Invasive, by his knowledge of the game

The Portuguese has kept a fine knowledge of the game from his past as a coach, which he put to use to become the renowned sporting director that we know today. But his desire to influence the game of the team he accompanies has remained intact, and has in a way taken a new turn, since his choices on the transfer window directly influence the performance of his clubs.

Not so surprising therefore, to feel the Portuguese very concerned by the Parisian slump, the one noticeable on the ground. Not by chance either if the discussion with Neymar went up a notch, when the Brazilian would have pointed out the impertinence of several of the summer recruits. The choice to bring Christophe Galtier to Paris also has to do with the management of the Portuguese: the precarious situation of the Parisian coach, placed on an ejection seat for several days, places Campos in a delicate situation.

The big difference comes from the context in which Campos comes out of the woodwork, following ten years spent cultivating discretion in the clubs where he plays. These two events that occurred in less than a week are not unprecedented in the history of the Portuguese manager, but they are further evidence of the strong period of turbulence that Paris Saint-Germain is going through.
