Variable refresh rate – VRR for short – has been a much requested feature for many PlayStation 5 users since the console’s launch. The good news is that it’s finally happening; Sony has announced that support for VRR will arrive via a PS5 update this week. A few games will be specifically updated to take advantage of the feature, although you can enable an option to apply it to “unsupported” games as well.
With that in mind, Sony says the following games will be updated “in the coming weeks”:
Not the best option, is it? But it is worth remembering that you can still enable VRR everything From your games through PS5 system settings – The listed game fixes will allow for the “Best VRR Experience”.
If you are having trouble playing an unsupported game, you can simply disable it in your console settings, as shown below:
If you’re sitting wondering what a VRR actually is, here’s a brief explanation from the official PlayStation Blog: “VRR dynamically synchronizes the display refresh rate with the graphics output of the PS5 console. This improves the visual performance of PS5 games by reducing or eliminating visual elements, such as frame timing issues and tearing, gameplay in many PS5 titles is smoother when scenes are displayed smoothly, graphics are sharper, and input lag is reduced. “
Essentially, VRR can improve your gaming performance, but you need to make sure you have an HDMI 2.1 VRR compatible TV or computer monitor for it to work.
Sony also states that enabling VRR does not guarantee a performance boost unless the game receives a specific patch as noted above.
