The rumor has just been dropped like a stone in the pond: Sony would be working on a new version of the PS5 with a different chassis and, above all, offering a detached disk drive.

When the diet continues

The PlayStation 5 often has a few new models, allowing Sony to optimize its infrastructure in order to lighten it, to be a little less energy-consuming and above all to reduce its development costs: this is a fairly recurrent fact in industry and therefore nothing new to report. However, the model in question today might well arouse the curiosity of more than one player: it would offer a new chassis… as well as a removable Blu-Ray drive.

The information comes to us from the insider-gaming site, launched today by Tom Henderson, an insider who we already know well for his many scoops. In his supported article “from sources familiar with Sony’s plans” who would have confided on condition of anonymity, it is thus said that the middle of the year 2023 would see a redesign of the PS5 which would be marketed around September 2024.

The PlayStation 5 having already known several chassis (A, B and C), it would then bear the name of chassis D and might well be even lighter and thinner, without changing its design.

To a removable disk drive?

The Xbox 360 offered an external disc drive to play HD-DVD, Blu-Ray’s big competitor.

As said before, the great novelty, frankly surprising, would come a record player that would be sold either separately or as a bundle. It is not known if it will be compatible with the machines already released, which would then allow the PS5 Digital Edition to be compatible with physical games, or those who have broken the element concerned to continue playing.

Regarding the appearance and practicality of the machineit is said that the aesthetics of the console would not be spoiled and that it will attach to the machine via an additional rear USB-C portthen coming to be grafted naturally.

Obviously, we will wait wisely for formalization or a denial in good and due form, when the time is right. For the moment, it’s time for debate: do you think such an accessory is relevant for players?
