To celebrate the first anniversary of its new PlayStation Plus, Sony is strengthening its offer with cloud gaming integrating PS5 games. Good news accompanied by small lines.
The new PlayStation Plus is a year old. Twelve months ago, Sony launched its response to Xbox Game Pass with a new PlayStation Plus Essential, Extra or Premium offer which eliminated PlayStation Now, its subscription dedicated to cloud gaming.
For Sony, the first assessment of this operation is rather positive. The firm has started to recruit new subscribers once more, and has mainly converted PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers to more expensive offers. The firm would like to strengthen this mechanism by improving its PlayStation Plus Premium.
PS5 games in cloud gaming? Yes, but…
PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers notably benefit from access to Sony’s streaming service thanks to cloud gaming. However, this offer had not evolved technically. In other words, it was only possible to stream PS4 games from the catalog on PC or console. Worse, the incompatibility of PS4 and PS5 saves made it impossible to play the same game in cloud gaming as on a PS5 by resuming its progress.
These problems, Sony announces to correct them by starting to test PS5 game streaming on its cloud gaming service. This includes games from the PlayStation Plus catalog, but also game trials and PS5 games owned by the player, if they are cloud gaming compatible.
Unfortunately, with this welcome addition, Sony also seems to be adding additional issues. Indeed, the press release from the firm only mentions the possibility of streaming a PS5 game… on a PS5. PlayStation’s cloud gaming is not offered on the web or on mobile, but a PC client was offered until then. For Sony, it seems that it is only a question of being able to test a game in cloud gaming on PS5 before ending up downloading and launching it locally.
In addition, Sony does not give any date regarding the addition of PS5 cloud gaming. The firm is content to indicate that they are only at the ” first steps function test.
