News hardware PS5: confident, Sony plans millions of PSVR 2, its ultimate VR headset, but…

While it has not yet announced a release date for its new virtual reality headset PlayStation VR 2, or PSVR 2, Sony is already showing very strong ambitions for its new device. But the whole is without counting on the competition which is preparing.

We don’t yet know when PSVR 2 will hit the market, but it now seems agreed that this new virtual reality headset will miss the end of the year celebrations. Indeed, Sony has already indicated that it intends to offer it for sale in early 2023, without further details. “Early 2023” can represent the time frame of the first quarter of the year, which turns out to be rather vague, it must be admitted.

However, missing Christmas does not seem to scare Sony, which appears to be already convinced of the success of its PlayStation VR 2. According Bloombergthe Japanese manufacturer would be making sure to have sufficient stock to meet demand.

Two million PSVR 2 available by March 2023

As we know, the global crisis that began in 2020 with the COVID-19 pandemic and continued therefollowing by the shortage of raw materials linked to the war in Ukraine makes the supply of many high-tech products very complicated. Sony knows it well: almost two years following the release of the PS5, it is still difficult to find one for sale.because stocks are constantly in tension.

As a result, many observers are wondering regarding the Japanese firm’s ability to meet future demand for PSVR 2. But according to the American media Bloomberg, generally very well informed, Sony reportedly anticipated the situation and plans to have two million PSVR 2s available for sale by March 2023. The production would even started last september to reach this goal.

When the first PSVR of the name was released on the market in October 2016, it took eight months to reach one million copies sold. But the current context is different: virtual reality is now much more developed and more popular with gamers. Otherwise, the promises of PSVR 2, which is intended to be linked to the PS5, more powerful than the PS4, are much more enticing.

Sony should be wary of the competition

Sony’s success with PSVR 2 may well be assured thanks to outstanding performance and an attractive catalog of games, which already includes around twenty titles such as Horizon: Call of the Mountain, No Man’s Sky or Resident Evil Village. However, some points make owners of a first generation PSVR cringeincluding the fact that games from the first headset will not be backwards compatible with the new model.

Otherwise, Sony’s ambitions might be held back by competition. Meta still meets with great success with its Meta Quest 2, and the Meta Quest Pro announcement is imminent. Next year, the Meta Quest 3, a new iteration of its offer aimed at the general public, might make a remarkable arrival on the marketwith a focus on metaverse and mixed reality.

Faced with autonomous headsets and well-established technologies from Meta, Sony will no doubt have a lot to do to stay the course throughout the year, although it’s likely that the curious and hardcore PS5 fans will be interested in PSVR 2 as soon as it’s released. Answer in a few months!
