Modern game consoles have very many updates, mainly to fix bugs. But some software versions also bring their share of new features and this is the case today for Sony’s PlayStation 5 (PS5). At least, that’s the case for some lucky players who have been selected to test the beta version of this new update. Several countries are concerned, including France, and the lucky winners have been contacted by email.
This beta version includes “new audio and accessibility options, social features and interface improvements”, details Sony. Thus, the PS5 now supports Tempest 3D AudioTech audio technology, for Dolby Atmos compatible HDMI devices. There is also a new storage side, since the PS5 now allows you to expand its capacity with an SSD in M.2 format up to 8 TB, once morest 4 TB previously, in addition to the 825 GB of the SSD delivered with the machine. . Be careful though, not all M.2 SSDs are compatible with the PS5.
Another significant new feature, it will now be possible to adjust the volume or mute the beeps that the console emits when switching on, switching off and switching to rest mode. Convenient for night gamers!
Other improvements concern the interface of the console, aiming in particular to make it easier to use. The in-game help has been enriched and user tips can help new players to familiarize themselves with the PS5 interface. It is also possible to use a second controller as an assistance, to “to help a friend or child get through a difficult section in a game”for example, or to try out a new way to play with your friends.
Finally, the PS5 improves its accessibility options by offering haptic feedback from the system interface, for the DualSense, DualSense Edge or PS VR2 Sense. “This optional feature enhances immersion and is particularly useful for visually or hearing impaired players who appreciate additional feedback confirming their input”says Sony.
An update rolled out later this year
After the beta phase, this packed-with-new update will roll out more widely around the world later this year. Sony states that “some features offered during the beta phase may not make it into the final version or are subject to change.”
