As we’ve reported before, Sony’s PS VR2 headset for its PlayStation 5 console is being researched for use on PC. However, according to the latest progress in decrypting the software and hardware of the Playstation VR 2, it will require additional hardware to run it on a computer, hardware that is still in the development phase.
IVRy already known on the compatibility of the first PSVR, seems to be progressing well on the PSVR 2
Day #121: And we’re in!
– PSVR2 was blocking VR modes by saying it mightn’t do DSC
– We modified an AMD Open Source Linux GPU driver to force DSC
– Now we know how to put the PSVR2 into VR mode, so we can design some hardware to do it on Windows
– “Can PSVR2 be used on PC?” – Yes pic.twitter.com/fNnLaNYEV1— iVRy (@iVRy_VR) June 28, 2023
We now have answers to both of these questions:
– Yes, PSVR2 can be used for VR on PC
– No, Sony is not actively trying to block it (or at least, they’re not trying very hard)It will need additional hardware though, due to Sony’s design choices

The developer iVRyknown for its driver to use the original PS VR headset on PC, revealed on Twitter that Sony’s new virtual reality headset features technical challenges for its use on PC, due to the headset blocking the DSC (Digital Signal Converter). Nevertheless, the developer has managed to put the headset in VR modethus paving the way for the development of additional materials needed for its use on PC.
Everyone will need an adapter (apart from some AMD users on Linux). That adapter doesn’t exist yet. We have to design and build one. Then hopefully some hardware company will pick it up and mass-produce it.

Although only AMD users on Linux can currently use the headset without additional hardware, it is expected that the headset will be designed and mass-produced to meet the needs of other users.
DISCLAIMER: This is Windows SteamVR, running on nVidia, sending output via HDMI to a Linux box that has the PSVR2 connected to a AMD GPU. We didn’t magically solve complex hardware issues that require us to design and build custom circuitry since yesterday.

While the market for PC VR headsets is already well supplied, the opportunity to use the PS VR2 would undoubtedly be greatly appreciated, due to its unique features. Although its price may seem a little high, it is largely justified by the immersive experience it offers.
With cutting-edge design and new features, the PlayStation VR2 headset is a true breakthrough in virtual reality. Its price reflects its status as a next-gen device, and only future progress will tell if this new technology is worth the investment. It remains to be seen whether the latter will work perfectly for playing on PC for those who already own a PS5 and kill two birds with one stone. For others who are only on PC, the question only arises with the release within a few months of the Quest 3, Meta’s standalone headset that can do PCVR as well.
