(Alliance News) – Prysmian Group Spa announced on Tuesday that it has been selected by TSO Amprion, one of Europe’s leading electricity transmission system operators, as the preferred bidder for the two offshore grid connection systems BalWin1 and BalWin2 and for the DC34 terrestrial cable project.

The preferential tender agreement provides for the obligation for the parties to negotiate in good faith the points of the projects which remain to be defined, with the aim of concluding the definitive contracts by January 15, 2024. Prysmian has committed to reserve the production and installation capacity needed up to that date. The contracts have a total value of approximately 4.5 billion euros.

These three projects are part of Germany’s overall plan to install 70 GW of offshore wind power by 2045 and will bring energy produced in the North Sea to consumers in western regions. and southern parts of the country.

BalWin1 and BalWin2 will transport up to 2 GW of energy each from the future offshore wind farms that will be built within the BalWin Cluster in the German North Sea to the grid connection points in Westerkappeln and Wehrendorf, thus facilitating the energy transition in the industrial heart of Germany. Each cable system will consist of two 525kV DC single core high voltage copper cables, with XLPE insulation for the underwater sections and P-Laser insulation for the land sections, plus a dedicated metallic return cable and a fiber optic cable.

BalWin1 will use approximately 1,070 km of cables over a 358 km route, while BalWin2 will use approximately 1,100 km of cables over a 376 km route.

DC34, which is part of the Rhein-Main-Link, will connect the substation in the Ovelgönne/Rastede/Wiefelstede/Westerstede region to a second substation in Bürstadt to transport up to 2 GW of energy produced by North Sea offshore wind farms to consumers in the Rhine-Main metropolitan area. The cable system will consist of two single core 525 kV copper high voltage DC cables with P-Laser insulation, as well as a dedicated metallic return cable. DC34 will use 2,100 km of cable on the route through Germany.

“This agreement represents a significant step forward in the timely completion of these three important projects. Indeed, it allows us to secure the main components of our offshore projects until 2030,” said Hendrik Neumann, Chief Technical Officer of Amprion. .

“Prysmian is strongly committed to the development of greener and smarter power grids, supporting Amprion, one of our main customers, in its important energy transition objectives”, underlined Hakan Ozmen, executive vice president of the unit. commercial Projects of the Prysmian group.
