Proximus said on Tuesday that it had blocked 3.2 million fraudulent messages during the first two weeks of using its new platform to protect customers once morest “smishing”, a method of SMS scam. Since the activation of the platform, an average of 229,000 SMS messages have been detected and blocked each day.
At the beginning of October, Telecoms Minister Petra De Sutter (Groen) announced that GSM users would receive far fewer fraudulent SMS messages thanks to the development of software that allows operators to intervene immediately.
Proximus officially launched its new platform on October 4 and the first results are “already promising” with 3.2 million messages blocked. According to the company, the platform should therefore be able to counter most smishing attempts before they reach their recipients.
The device notably captures massive sendings of messages from the same number or which contain suspicious links. Artificial intelligence also makes it possible to train the algorithm to better identify this type of message.
The development of this new platform constitutes “a major step forward” in the fight once morest smishing, underlines Ben Appel, “corporate affairs lead” at Proximus.
Fraudulent text messages usually come from an unknown number asking recipients to pay an unpaid bill or fill in missing personal details. They often contain links to fictitious websites with the aim of deceiving the recipient or extracting money.
