Provinces should not play politics on electricity relief, Punjab gave from its own resources: Prime Minister

Addressing the cabinet meeting in Islamabad today, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said that ‘in recent days, the Punjab government has given relief to consumers who use 200 to 500 units of electricity.’

He said that a budget of 45 billion was allocated at the provincial level to provide this relief. The Federation had nothing to do with it. The rest of the provinces should do the same, in the name of Allah, give this relief to their people, they should refrain from politicizing it.’

The Prime Minister clarified that 60 percent of the budget goes to the provinces which is in trillions while the interest on the development loans taken is not paid by the provinces, so this money should be spent carefully.

“We gave relief of fifty billion rupees up to two hundred units, from which 86 percent of domestic consumers across Pakistan are benefiting.”

He said that in partnership with the Balochistan government, a plan of 70 billion was made to shift tubewells from electricity to solar energy, in which 55 billion was the share of the federal government and the rest is being contributed by the Balochistan government.

Prime Minister Shahaz Sharif said that a staff level agreement has been reached with the IMF, inflation has to be reduced further. One has to work day and night to collect tax revenue.

He said that the IMF will be taken fully on board in every case and will not take any foolish step like the previous government. During this period the country was on the brink of default, now inflation has come down from 38 to 11 percent due to the policies of the caretaker government and the current government.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif while speaking in the federal cabinet meeting added that the recent rains caused loss of life and property and the rains also damaged roads and bridges, but the National Disaster Management (NDMA) did a good job. Good coordination with the Provincial Governments and the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), combined efforts, helped a lot in controlling the situation.

Earlier in the meeting, the cabinet was briefed on the recent decision of the Supreme Court regarding the Mubarak Sani case.

The cabinet was informed that an additional petition has been filed in the Supreme Court of Pakistan on August 17, 2024 regarding the Mubarak Sani case on the direction of the Prime Minister.

The Cabinet was further informed that there was a detailed discussion in the National Assembly regarding this case and the matter was referred to the Standing Committee on Law and Justice of the National Assembly.

In the meeting of the Standing Committee on Law and Justice of the National Assembly, the government and the opposition parties unanimously decided that the National Assembly will tell the federal government that regarding the factual and legal aspects of the case and the opinions of the scholars in the Supreme Court. An application should be filed on behalf of the government.

In this regard, there was a telephonic communication between the Prime Minister and the Speaker of the National Assembly, after which an additional petition was filed in the Supreme Court on behalf of the government as per the instructions of the Prime Minister.

According to the instructions of the Prime Minister, the Attorney General will appear in the hearing of the additional application in the Supreme Court on 22 August 2024 and along with his team will give arguments in the light of the opinion of the Ulemas and the Standing Committee on Law and Justice of the National Assembly. The Prime Minister has issued clear instructions in this regard.
