Physics Nobel Laureate Anton Zeilinger received the Grand Decoration of Honor in Gold from the State of Upper Austria on Wednesday followingnoon at the Landhaus in Linz. In his words of thanks, the quantum physicist, who was born in Ried im Innkreis, emphasized the “importance of funding basic research”, even if it is not always immediately clear what goals are being achieved with it.

The aim of Zeilinger’s research is “to make people’s lives better,” said Governor Thomas Stelzer (ÖVP), who presented the state’s highest award at a ceremony. “We should enjoy scientists and give them the opportunity to pursue their research.” Stelzer praised Zeilinger as “one of the most internationally brilliant minds in the world of science and research”, but also as “a likeable ambassador of our country who has always remained closely connected to his homeland”, which is also reflected in his work in the Internationale Academy Traunkirchen show. Zeilinger is “a role model and bearer of cosmopolitanism”.

Zeilinger comes from Ried im Innkreis. He studied physics and mathematics in Vienna, followed by an international scientific career. In 1997 he published his most acclaimed work on the first teleportation of a particle in the journal “Nature”, which also made him famous in public and earned him the nickname “Mister Beam”. This success, which was quickly compared to “Beamen” from the TV series “Star Trek”, was “only” a spin-off of his fundamental examination of quantum physics.

In 1999 Zeilinger returned to Vienna, where the now 78-year-old – now a professor emeritus – continues to teach and research. From 2013 to 2022 Zeilinger also headed the Austrian Academy of Sciences. In October 2022 he received the Nobel Prize in Physics together with the French physicist Alain Aspect and his US colleague John Clauser “for experiments with entangled photons, proof of the violation of Bell’s inequalities and pioneering quantum information science”.
