Province of Luxembourg Tax Collection: Abandoned Amounts and Financial Impact

2023-11-25 06:01:00

Since 2016, the Province of Luxembourg has not been able to recover a whole series of taxes from certain taxpayers, despite sending several letters. Given the impossibility of recovering them, these amounts will be placed in “non-value” as they say in financial jargon. In summary, the Province abandons these amounts and they are therefore removed from revenue. A common practice, including in municipalities. We are talking regarding a total sum of €7,474 since 2016.

For second residences, we are talking regarding 128 taxpayers, the amount, for me, is therefore not negligible (Editor’s note: €6,400), calls on liberal advisor Dominique Gillard. This is a bad signal. It’s simply telling people that when they don’t pay, we don’t ask them anything.

Finance MP Coralie Bonnet (Engaged) does not agree. Four letters were sent: a classic, the reminder as well as two summons. “A registered letter in 2023 costs €8.50. The cost/benefit ratio must be taken into account, she points out. We are also talking regarding many debtors who are abroad, and for whom sending mail is even more expensive. These uncollected amounts represent 0.75% of the taxes for the current year.

“Until the possible seizure of the property”

Not enough to convince Dominique Gillard: “When you have a second residence, you are able to pay €50 in tax. For some, the tax is double or even triple, because they have not paid for several years. For these, the pursuit seems wise to me.

They are not insolvents, there are assets that can be seized“, points out Vincent Wauthoz (MR).

In the commune of Erezée, we continue until the possible seizure of the property“, assures the group leader MR Michel Jacquet, also mayor of Erezée.

In the vote, the Liberals will abstain. As well as two Eco advisors.
