“Yesterday it was cabbage stew and stew. And then a little yogurt and a little chocolate. It still feels good“, smiles David, in the line which is getting longer by the minute. It is Friday evening, in the Botanique metro station, volunteers are serving a hot meal and coffee for free.
Winter is upon us: like every year for 35 years, the Opération Thermos association returned to service on November 1st. Let’s go for a marathon of solidarity: volunteers are mobilized seven evenings a week, for six months, in the Brussels metro.
With her hat on her head, Marianne mightn’t do without this distribution: “If I had to buy a quarter of what I get here, I wouldn’t know how to live. Food is the basis of everything. This hot meal warms up the inside too.“Warming bodies, at the same time as hearts, is the purpose of this distribution which only lasts one part of the evening.
“Sometimes we make friends, acquaintances from last year that we see once more, we say hello, we catch up on news“, explains David, present like the day before and like every evening during the cold period for three years. “I come for pleasure“, continues Abi. “I am old, I am alone. If I don’t come here, I stay locked at home. You have no idea how important that is.“
