Every year, 20,000 women undergo a mastectomy* and the majority do not perform surgical reconstruction. “It’s normal, many don’t want to go back for surgery once more. There is also a majority of mature women who are suffering from breast cancer, even if we see more and more young people now, ”explains Marie-Odile Morel, president of the association, Cœur de FAM in Vire Normandie.
The appropriate material
For all these women, it is then a question of buying the necessary and adapted equipment.
“A part is covered by Social Security, but overall it remains to be paid for around €250”
This is where his association comes in.
Directly with pharmacies
As it is unique in France, requests are pouring in from everywhere: Narbonne, Toulouse, Honfleur, Saint-Brieuc and Normandy, of course. The association responds to requests, but works with pharmacies to directly settle bills for prostheses or bras. “We don’t take care of wigs or certain products such as varnish which prevents nails from falling off”, specifies Marie-Odile Morel. “We practice by mail or by email without any problem”.
But to fund it all, Heart of FAM must raise funds. This is exactly what it does through various actions carried out throughout the year.
The next mobilization will take place on Saturday, September 2, 2023. This is the annual march open to all. It takes place from the Salle du Vaudeville at 2 p.m. for a return around 4 p.m. following 5 km in town. The participation has increased by €2 (€12) in order to cope with the increases that the equipment purchased for women also suffers.
Hotlines for registrations
Registrations are recommended. The first 250 registrants will even get a free t-shirt. They must be done directly on site at the premises located at the Pierre Compte stadium. The permanence takes place as follows: Wednesday 30 from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. and Friday August 25 and September 1 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. It is requested to bring a pink t-shirt if possible.
