Provea says that “repressive patterns” in Venezuela “produce more and more victims”

The NGO Provea denounced on Monday that “repressive patterns” have been established in Venezuela that “are becoming stronger” and “produce more and more victims,” following the arrests recorded during the post-election protests against the announced victory of Nicolás Maduro, which has been questioned inside and outside the country.

Through X, the organization said that relatives and international organizations have reported arrests “without judicial orders,” which have been carried out without “due process” in “most cases,” without specifying the amounts.

“The presumption of innocence, that guarantee of due process and the right to freedom, does not exist in Venezuela for those who take dissident positions. Every dissident is labeled an enemy and every enemy is presumed guilty,” Provea warned.

In response to this, he stated that “these are not isolated incidents” but rather “correspond to a State policy” that “has had the tolerance of the Ombudsman’s Office and the Public Prosecutor’s Office (MP).”

According to the MP, more than 2,400 people have been arrested for generating “violence” and causing material damage during the post-election protests, when the Prosecutor’s Office also recorded 25 deaths.

In this regard, Maduro blamed the opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia, as well as his main supporter, María Corina Machado, for the deaths, the “criminal violence” and the “destruction” of public places.

On Saturday, González Urrutia said that Maduro, instead of “democratically preparing for a peaceful transition,” decided to “persecut, arrest and assassinate” Venezuelans who “have only demanded that their majority will be respected.”

The opposition candidate thus reiterated that the victory in the presidential elections was his, a claim that the opposition maintains and supports with the publication of “83.5%” of the electoral records, which have been labeled by the Prosecutor’s Office as false documents.
