Provea received the WOLA 2024 award for investigating human rights violations in Venezuela

The NGO Provea received the 2024 Human Rights Award on Thursday for its “courage in investigating human rights violations,” a recognition granted by the Washington Office on Latin America (WOLA).

Through the social network X, WOLA announced the recognition on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the American organization, which recognized Provea for “its support for victims and its promotion of respect for the rule of law and democracy” in Venezuela.

“Despite ongoing challenges and attacks, Provea has served as a beacon of hope for the people of Venezuela since its founding in 1988. Provea advocates for Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ESCR), striving to build a democratic society based on pluralism, solidarity and participation,” they added.

For its part, the NGO expressed its gratitude for the award, and stressed that it is a recognition of the Venezuelan victims. “They built an organization to help people, the most humble and vulnerable, they left us a path to defend everyone without discrimination,” said Marino Alvarado, Provea’s coordinator of enforceability.

Lisette González, coordinator of monitoring, research and media for the NGO, said that “there is resistance, there is hope for change. With their heads held high, different sectors are mobilizing to claim their rights, to demand democracy, and with growing enthusiasm they hope to be protagonists of a change that will seek the implementation of urgent public policies to reverse inequality and the precariousness of work, education and health.”
