Proton launches its first bitcoin wallet

Proton, the company recognized for its secure email, VPN, and storage services, has announced the launch of its first cryptocurrency wallet.

The Swiss-based Proton Wallet will initially support only Bitcoin, with plans to include additional cryptocurrencies in the future. The new wallet is a self-custody option, which means users will have their own private keys.

Similar to MetaMask and Ledger hardware wallets, Proton employs a recovery phrase as a backup for private keys, allowing users to restore their wallets even if the device is lost.

Currently, the wallet is accessible only to users subscribed to the Proton Visionary Plan, but it will soon be available to all users. The crypto wallet will be offered as a web application, as well as on iOS and Android operating systems.

Features of Proton Wallet

Proton Wallet is integrated into the Proton ecosystem, which comprises over 100 million accounts. This integration enables wallet users to send cryptocurrencies to other Proton Wallet holders by simply entering their email addresses. The company has also partnered with Banxa and Ramp, allowing customers to purchase BTC using fiat currencies. All transactions from the crypto wallet will be processed on the main chain, as the company has not yet integrated the Lightning Network.

Additionally, Proton Wallet will support two-factor authentication, including hardware security keys. It also provides users access to Proton Sentinel, a system that utilizes artificial intelligence to assist accounts if they are compromised or if an attacker has acquired a user’s login details.

“The societal value of Bitcoin has been hampered by transaction difficulties and security concerns, so we designed Proton Wallet to tackle both issues. By allowing the wallet to support Bitcoin through email, we have made transactions as straightforward as PayPal while preserving the decentralized and deposit-free essence of Bitcoin,” stated Andy Yen, Co-Founder and CEO of Proton.

Proton’s wallet includes an intriguing privacy feature. Each time users send or receive BTC to a new recipient, the wallet replaces the public addresses, preventing anyone from tracking all past transactions linked to a particular public address.
