Protests in Ladakh against the arrest of prominent environmental activist Sonam Wangchuck and others – World

Protests have erupted in Ladakh against the arrest of prominent environmental activist Sonam Wangchak and others, with the strike affecting daily life and movement across the region.

Kargil Democratic Alliance (KDA) and Leh Apex Body (LAB) shut down both Kargil and Leh districts, due to the strike, daily life and movement has been severely affected in the entire region. Prominent environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk had launched the ‘Delhi Chalo Padyatra’ from Leh a month ago to advocate for sixth schedule status for Ladakh.

The detained group included prominent Ladakhi leaders, marching towards Delhi as ‘Delhi Chalo Padyatra’. Notable leaders like Co-Chairman Asghar Ali Karbalai KDA and Chief Executive Councilor of LAHDC Mohammad Jafar Akhun are also among the detained leaders.

Kargil Democratic Alliance and Leh Apex Body (LAB) had called for the strike. Protests continue to demand Ladakh’s fundamental rights, including statehood and constitutional protections. Protesters have also been demanding statehood for Ladakh, its inclusion under the Sixth Schedule, speeding up the recruitment process with the Public Service Commission, and separate Lok Sabha seats for Leh and Kargil.

The KDA has termed the detentions as a violation of fundamental rights while the actions of the government and the police insulted the democratic rights of Ladakhis. All Kargil Students Association Delhi (AKSAD) has also condemned the arrests. Disappointment was expressed over the government’s refusal to allow the peaceful marchers to enter Delhi.

Both KDA and AKSAD urged the Indian government to address Ladakh’s concerns and fulfill its promises for the betterment of the region. Kashmiri leaders Omar Abdullah, Mehbooba Mufti, and MY Tarigami have condemned the detention of environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk and her colleagues by the Indian government.

Umar Abdullah criticized the government for violating the promises made to the people of Ladakh and detaining peaceful citizens.

As the current agitation protests across the Ladakh region show that India’s illegal move to abrogate Article 370 and 35A, the people of Kashmir have been demanding propaganda, prosperity, and better peace and prosperity from Good Media since August 2019. Aman’s narrative of India has been rejected.
