There were protests and arrests in connection with the US Democratic Party convention in Chicago.
The US Democratic Party convention in Chicago is accompanied by large pro-Palestinian demonstrations. Several thousand people joined a protest march to the venue in the afternoon, where the main program of the four-day meeting began in the evening (local time). A speech by President Joe Biden was expected there, among other things.
The protest was primarily directed against the actions of the Israeli military in the Gaza Strip and the US military support for Israel.
“I am so frustrated, sad and angry because my tax money is being used to kill my own people,” said Palestinian Nida Almuti, who said she came to the United States as a 16-year-old and took part in the protest.
Like many other demonstrators, the 61-year-old accused Israel of committing a “genocide” in the Gaza Strip and accused the USA of participating in it through its support. The Democrats, as the president’s party, bear a special responsibility.
Police deployed in large numbers
The protest was supported by a wide range of groups. The police were deployed in large numbers around the protest march. CNN reported, citing police, that four people were arrested after they broke through a security fence near the venue.
The demonstrations had brought back memories for many people in the city of anti-war protests surrounding the party convention in 1968 in Chicago. At that time, the USA was deeply involved in the Vietnam War. Thousands of people took part in demonstrations in the city around the meeting. Violent clashes with the police broke out. Dozens were injured.
