The Water Festival brought together activists from several collectives and associations on Saturday in Vevey (VD), who protested once morest the privatization of blue gold by multinationals. A handful of activists briefly entered the gardens of Nestlé headquarters to carry out an action.

A demonstration was authorized on Saturday morning in front of the Alimentarium in Vevey, not far from Nestlé headquarters, at the call of the collective “Les Vagues de la Révolte” which brings together several organizations. Participants “defended water once morest multinationals who privatize it for their toxic profits”.

Among the other organizers, we might notably find the “Land Rumbles” and “Climate Strike” movements, the Attac and Public Eye organizations, the Alternative Decroissances party as well as French and Mexican associations. Activists from other countries also made the trip, including Mathilde Panot, president of the La France Insoumise party in the French National Assembly.

Resource hoarding

Around 25 activists then went to the Nestlé gardens by the lake in the early followingnoon. They threw empty PET bottles there, before retreating when the police arrived, said a spokesperson for the cantonal police. No one was arrested.

“Nestlé made eleven billion francs in profits in 2022 thanks to the sale of bottled water. To do this, the company monopolizes sources and groundwater and prevents local communities from using them, all over the world” , they lamented. They also accuse the company of pumping water “excessively, which prevents the renewal of water tables”, and “of dodging its responsibilities by producing false reports on pumping rates.”
