Protesting Greece’s New Labor Law: Unions Strike Against Worker Exploitation and Job Insecurity

Unions in Greece launched a 24-hour strike in several sectors, including public transport and education, on Thursday to protest a new law encouraging flexibility in the labor market.

Civil servants, hospital staff, teachers and dock workers joined the mobilization, which led to the closure of the Athens metro. One of the central provisions of the law, which must be approved later Thursday, allows private sector employees to work for more than one employer during the same day. Businesses will also be able to require their staff to work six days a week in the event of an emergency. According to the opposition parties, the conservative government will thus worsen the exploitation of employees in a labor market that is already weakly regulated and where many fear losing their jobs.

Labor Minister Adonis Georgiadis defended himself by arguing that the aim of the law was to “stimulate employment” and D'”increase the number of viable and well-paid jobs“On Wednesday, the entrance to the building housing his office in Athens was blocked off with red graffiti calling him “junk“The law also prohibits striking employees from preventing a colleague from working during a mobilization and prohibits dismissals linked to discrimination. In July, the government of Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, reappointed at the end of June for a second term, had already adopted a law authorizing employees to work after the age of 74, seven years beyond the retirement age. The Prime Minister pledged to reduce the unemployment rate in Greece, currently 10.8%, to 8% by 2027.
