Shots were fired from the official residence of the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka, after thousands of protesters stormed his main gate and set fire to a truck parked there, according to Agence France-Presse.
Police sources confirmed to the agency that shots were fired in the air to prevent the protesters from crossing the security belt inside the residence, where Rajapaksa is still with many of his close associates, shortly after his announcement of his resignation.
In addition, the police fired tear gas to repel the angry demonstrators after they were attacked earlier on Monday by loyalists of the resigned Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa.
