Several hundred people – 500 according to the police – demonstrated on Sunday followingnoon on Place Poelaert in Brussels to protest once morest the ruling in the Sanda Dia case, named following this young student who died during a hazing organized by members of the Reuzegom circle. According to the demonstrators, the sentences handed down are far too lenient and tinged with class justice and racism.

The Antwerp Court of Appeal sentenced the 18 members of the Reuzegom student circle to community service terms of up to 300 hours and fines of 400 euros for the death of Sanda Dia.

“We do not believe that the social class of the suspects and of Sanda did not play a role in this story”, reprimand the demonstrators. “Nor do we believe that Sanda’s skin color and ethnicity did not play a role. Would we have had the same leniency if the perpetrators had been of African or North African origin?” they ask.

Protesters believe that the legal treatment of Sanda Dia’s death is not an isolated incident. They draw a parallel with the death of Mawda, Adil and Mehdi, all killed during police interventions.

The press also took it for his rank, while the media did not reveal the identity of the members of the condemned student circle. Several demonstrators chanted their names and displayed signs bearing the identity of the culprits.

“We are disappointed by this decision, as it is disproportionate to the terrible act that has been committed,” Mr Daizy said. “When justice favors people with money and power, there is no justice or equality. This shows once once more that racism continues to play a role in our society.”
