Thiruvananthapuram: The Thiruvananthapuram Corporation may withdraw its action once morest the sanitation workers who protested by throwing the Onamsadya in the garbage. Sadya protested by going to the garbage dump in protest of being made to work without being allowed to eat the Onasadya which she bought with her own money. Against the backdrop of strong protests within the CPM once morest Mayor Arya Rajendran’s action of dismissing temporary employees for this reason, the action is set to be corrected.
It is reported that the CPM has instructed Mayor Arya Rajendran to withdraw the action once morest the cleaning workers of Chala Circle of Thiruvananthapuram Corporation. Rejecting the mayor’s action, CPM state secretary M.V. Govindan came to the scene. His position was that it is not party policy to dismiss protestors. Meanwhile, CPM Thiruvananthapuram district secretary Anavoor Nagappan came forward in support of the mayor’s action. The protest method of throwing food in the garbage is not acceptable. He said that other methods of protest might have been adopted.
The dispute arose because the employees who had gone to eat Onam following their work shift on Saturday were asked to return to work. It was discussed that they did not eat Onam Sadya and threw it in the garbage heap. With this, the mayor intervened and suspended seven permanent workers and dismissed four temporary workers. Majority of the workers are CIT members which made the Mayor’s action controversial.
The dismissal of the sanitation workers without even a show-cause notice drew widespread criticism. It is reported that the CPM leadership was not ready to support the mayor and stood by the workers including the left wing activists behind the decision to withdraw the action. At present, it is reported that the action will be withdrawn following the return of the Mayor of Kozhikode.
