Arriving by bus, car or bicycle, some 300 activists took part in the protest action organized by the support network for peasant agriculture (RéSAP), departing from a roundregarding near the airport. from Bierset.
“We oppose the extension of Liège airport over more than 280 hectares of land, more than half of which is currently cultivated. More broadly, we are asking for a concrete stop across the whole of Wallonia,” explains Amandine Lejeune, representative of the NGO Autre Terre.
Several farmers’ organisations, including the United Federation of Herders and Farmers Groups (Fugea), the Farmers’ Action Movement (MAP) and the Boeren Forum, sent representatives to the event.
In procession, the demonstrators crossed land dedicated to concrete, symbolically planting a few onions and potatoes.
“The artificialization of these agricultural lands, moreover of the Hesbignon lands of incomparable quality, reduces the available surfaces and causes the prices to rise sharply. As a result, it becomes impossible for young farmers to set up. However, we need these farmers in Wallonia, it is a major issue”, concludes Amandine Lejeune.
