Nearly 200 collaborators from the French-speaking editorial offices of Tamedia and 20 minutes met on Tuesday in Lausanne. They shouted their anger at the layoffs announced these days by the German-speaking publisher and TX Group. More than fifty positions will be eliminated at 24 Heures, the Tribune de Genève and 20 Minutes.
The gathering began late in the morning at Lausanne station, where Vaudois journalists welcomed their Geneva colleagues. A procession of nearly 200 employees then joined the former Edipresse Tower, in front of the offices of Tamedia and 20 minutes, to protest once morest the layoffs in progress since Tuesday. Around 10% of the workforce is affected in French-speaking Switzerland, or 28 positions.

Incomprehensible measures
“There is a lot of misunderstanding. People have hollow faces. There are many people who have voluntarily remained teleworking to avoid being there in recent days,” reported Erwan Le Bec, president of the Society of 24-hour collaborators, Tuesday in the 12:30 p.m. of the RTS.
“The readership of 24 hours is increasing. We do not understand why we have to undergo these cuts today,” he stressed.
Dedication swept away
The mobilization marks the end of the consultation procedure between the unions and management for Tamedia’s paid titles (24 Heures, La Tribune de Genève and Le Matin Dimanche). Since Monday morning, the employees concerned have been summoned one by one to be notified of their dismissal.
Erwan Le Bec, who participated in the consultation procedure, spoke of the dedication of employees during the pandemic and during the federal elections in particular. “These are sometimes colleagues who have given 20 years of their lives to Edipresse, and now to Tamedia and TX Group, and who see their careers end in a few minutes.”
According to information from RTS, of the 28 people affected by layoffs at Tamedia, 16 have chosen the option of “voluntary” departure, among which nine are taking early retirement. The other departures would concern less than ten people, including three 24-hour employees. Official figures are due to be released by the end of the day.
