Last Monday, November 6, members of the League of Domestic Workers and the Committee of Undocumented Workers of the CSC protested once morest this future ordinance on economic migration, in front of the headquarters of Défi (the party of Bernard Clerfayt). Magali Verdi, organizer at the Christian Workers Movement, regrets that the ordinance does not provide access to the single permit for undocumented workers already present in Brussels. “Today, they are obliged to apply from the country of origin, which is, in fact, impossible for the vast majority. However, thousands of them already work in the “care” sectors, in construction or the Horeca sector. In our opinion, the region must be able to take political initiatives to change things. For example, allowing them to obtain a residence permit if the boss is ready to officially hire them“.
Clear response from Minister Clerfayt: “These workers do not have the required diplomas (with recognized equivalences), even if they sometimes have experience in the sector. Furthermore, they do not have legal status to live in the territory. Their regularization is perhaps desirable but it is up to the federal state to provide for it and to the Vivaldi government in this case. Economic migration is something else entirely!”.
