Throughout the month of Ramadan, Yabiladi offers you daily health advice. For this twenty-fifth capsule of our “Allô Doc” series, we will discuss with doctor Amine Mamoun Boutaleb, the subject of protein powder and his advice for doing sports and bodybuilding without harming our body.
This is an inseparable duo. When a person practices strength training, their protein needs, considered an essential element for building their muscles, become twice as high as normal. Thus, a protein shake or a snack rich in these amino acids can only help a person practicing this sport to achieve their goals. This is also the reason why some people use protein powder.
“The question that often arises is: are these protein powders dangerous for the body? But first you have to know that you have to take care of your diet,” says Doctor Amine Mamoun Boutaleb, resident doctor in the cardiology department of the CHU Ibn Rochd in Casablanca, who also practices bodybuilding.
“This diet must be balanced, with four to five meals a day, containing protein, fiber, vegetables, fruit and carbohydrates (carbohydrates, editor’s note)”, he adds.
A dietary supplement to be consumed in moderation
For protein powder, the practitioner tells us that these are “products made from other chemical or natural products, such as soy, which can be used to supplement their diet”. “In general, you should consume two grams per kilo per day. This means that an 80kg person can consume up to 160 grams of protein per day at most,” he explains.
“Protein powder can be consumed half an hour before exercise and half an hour following physical exertion, remembering that it is only a dietary supplement. We must focus on our healthy and balanced diet.

However, the doctor warns in certain cases. “People with liver or kidney impairment should avoid protein powders and consult a physician before using” these proteins, he says.
As for sport, the cardiologist suggests “five sessions a week”, recalling that we must “let our body rest twice a week”. “A person can exercise between an hour and an hour and a half maximum per day to avoid exhaustion and drink a quantity of water between 2 and 2.5 liters per day, to stay hydrated and evacuate toxins from their body. body,” he concludes.
