Protection Center opens as a shelter for homeless children and adolescents in the face of the intense winter cold

Asuncion, IP Agency.- The San Lorenzo Ministry of Children and Adolescents’ Shelter Protection Center, with capacity to receive 25 homeless children and adolescents, was officially authorized to provide food, shelter and support. It will be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

This center was officially opened this Friday, during the ceremony presided over by the heads of the MINNA, Walter Gutíerrez, and the National Emergency Secretariat, Arsenio Zárate, in San Lorenzo.

Gutiérrez stressed that it is a specialized center for the protection of homeless children and adolescents, where they receive food, support and specialized attention to understand why they were homeless.

He said the place will not only be open at night and early in the morning, but will be open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The head of the Ministry of Children and Adolescents stressed that the Refugio Protection Center has a capacity to care for 25 children and adolescents, although in the first week 40 were already cared for, who were referred to other MINNA Centers.

He explained that last night 13 children and a mother who was with two small children on the street arrived. They were from another department and are now here, explained Gutiérrez.

Hostel in Ciudad del Este

He stressed that a shelter with similar characteristics was set up in Ciudad del Este, through coordinated work with the National Emergency Secretariat.

He stressed that the general shelter on the Costanera is for 60 people, where the SEN has a module for children and adolescents and works in an integrated manner with the Ministry of Children and Adolescents. He added that depending on the case, they are contained in the place or referred to the Programmed Detoxification Unit, in the case of adolescents who are consuming drugs.

Gutiérrez mentioned that 95% of the cases are children who have lost all family ties, which is why a life plan is made for each child and each one of them is worked on independently. From here they go to the Pedagogical Coexistence Center, which is a long-stay center, he added.

Obviously, each case is subject to judicial review and the possibility of reintegration into the family is analyzed. In most cases, this is not achieved. We then look at the feasibility of reintegrating into the extended family, which might be grandparents or uncles, or emotional ties that might be a neighbor or teacher. We also have foster families, the Minister of Children and Adolescents stressed.
