Protecting Yourself From SMS Scams: Tips and Tricks to Stay Safe Online

Several people pressed the orange Alert Us button for the same reason. Arnaud and Haroun all received an SMS from the FPS Justice inviting them to pay a fine. Everything looks authentic at first glance, but they have doubts. Is this a scam?

The message in question says this: “SPF Justice: a fine is pending against you for violation of the highway code. Please resolve this via this site: spfjusticebelgium.com”.

The first thing to know, and it is the most important, is that the police and justice never send payment requests by SMS or to your private email address.

You receive your fines by post and you can consult them on a website: a secure mailbox on the Just-on-web site, in the category: My Justice.

You can connect with your identity card, or via ITSME and you will find all your current files there, for example, a judgment or a fine. And this is where you can pay it.

Some tips to protect yourself from scams

Second interesting thing in the message received by Internet users: the website mentioned in the SMS does not exist. This is not at all the address of the FPS Justice. The good one is this: https://justice.belgium.be/fr.

Generally speaking, when you receive a suspicious message or email, ask yourself several questions: Is it unexpected? Do you have a package waiting? Does the message resonate with anything? Do you know the sender? Where does the link we suggest you click lead to? Who is the message addressed to? If your name isn’t listed anywhere, be wary. Also pay attention to spelling mistakes.

Final advice: never give out personal data and forward suspicious emails to suspect@safeonweb.be. If unfortunately, it is too late, then go to the police and make a report.

Please note that these fraudulent SMS messages are extremely numerous, and that of the SPF is one example among others. Over the last six months, Proximus and Telenet have blocked 28 million SMS messages using new software.
