Protecting Yourself from Electronic Fraud: A Comprehensive Awareness Campaign

ABU DHABI, 3rd July, 2020 (WAM) — The Abu Dhabi Center for Legal and Community Awareness at the Judicial Department, “Responsibility,” launched an expanded awareness campaign to confront electronic fraud, which will last for three months, under the slogan “Digital Protection… A Safe Society,” with the aim of raising awareness of the most prominent cases. Electronic fraud and the methods used to lure victims, with an indication of the prevention methods that individuals can follow in order to protect themselves from falling into the clutches of cybercrime perpetrators.

​His Excellency Counselor Youssef Saeed Al-Abri, Undersecretary of the Abu Dhabi Judicial Department, stressed the importance of the role played by the “Responsibility” Center in providing preventive protection for members of society, by intensifying legal and community awareness campaigns, which constitute a protective fence to address crimes and negative behaviors, in line with Our wise leadership directives towards consolidating the foundations supporting the maintenance of security and stability.

He pointed out the center’s keenness to diversify the means used to deliver targeted educational messages using modern technological means through multiple media platforms, in implementation of the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice President of the State, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Presidential Court, Head of the Judicial Department. In Abu Dhabi, by consolidating community awareness and disseminating legal culture among the various segments of society.

For his part, Counselor Dr. Mohammed Rashid Al-Dhanhani, Director of the Abu Dhabi Center for Legal and Community Awareness, explained that the launch of this awareness campaign is of particular importance because electronic fraud is one of the most common types of electronic crimes, whose negative impact and damage has increased in the past few years, due to the increasing number of users Social media, with the multiplicity of methods and areas of fraud crimes due to the increase in the number of people on the Internet, and its overlap in all aspects of economic, commercial and social life.

He pointed out that individuals falling victim to electronic fraud comes as a result of not using the correct means of communication and websites, accessing unsafe sites, and not being sure of who is dealing with them, which results in the loss of people’s money using fraudulent methods, and threatens the economic development of individuals. Communities and countries because of the heavy losses suffered by the victims of this crime, and the difficulty of pursuing and recovering money, which made it important to stand on this problem and raise awareness of its forms and methods of prevention.

And he indicated that the awareness campaign will focus on defining the most prominent cases of electronic fraud, which takes place through fake shopping sites, impersonation of an official employee, fake office offers for domestic workers, fake shipping company messages, fake marriage offers, or real estate fraud by offering real estate. Low value compared to the market in order to entice the victim to pay quickly, or delude people into winning financial or in-kind prizes and request bank data to transfer the financial prize or pay sums to obtain the in-kind prize.

He added: “The campaign also sheds light on prevention methods to avoid the methods used in fraud, through the production of visual, audio and electronic materials, and the publication of a large number of educational leaflets and a set of stories and facts witnessed by the courts, through various communication platforms, in addition to legal awareness of the penalty. The perpetrators of the crime of electronic fraud in accordance with Article 40 of Federal Decree-Law No. 34 of 2021 regarding combating rumors and electronic crimes.
