In a report published on July 18, Santé Publique France highlights the recent impacts of the heat wave.

Public Health France deplores a large number of emergency visits for dehydration, hyperthermia but also hyponatremia, according to a report relayed by Free lunch. Hyponatremia is a risk associated with high heat, often overlooked, although it can sometimes prove fatal.

Characterized by low sodium levels in the blood, hyponatremia is mainly caused by excessive fluid consumption, kidney failure, heart failure, cirrhosis or the use of diuretics.

According to the MSD medical reference manual, the consequence of this risk is often cerebral dysfunction.
“Hyponatremia is characterized by lethargy and confusion and, when more severe, by muscle twitching and convulsions, gradually becoming unresponsive”says MSD.

The first symptoms

Main trigger factor, the excessive and too rapid consumption of liquid is to be avoided, recalls Free lunch. The trap is then present during high temperatures where hydration is important. The secret is to favor small regular quantities rather than the large one-off quantity. Respecting the daily limit of 5 liters not to be exceeded according to the water information centre. This limit is to be adjusted according to diet and perspiration.

It is therefore advisable to hydrate gently by listening to the feeling of thirst and to monitor the appearance of the first symptoms: lack of water; mouth and eye dryness to direct its consumption.
