[메디컬투데이=김준수 기자] Recently, the weather has become cooler and drier, and we can see that many people are engaging in outdoor activities more frequently. However, going out in the fall without preparation can greatly harm eye health due to dry winds and strong ultraviolet rays and cause various eye diseases.

In general, it is thought that ultraviolet rays only have a significant effect on the skin, but the eyes are more sensitive to ultraviolet rays than the skin, and when ultraviolet rays reach the cornea, lens, and retina, they can accelerate aging and cause pain.

Ultraviolet rays reach from the cornea located on the outermost side of the eye to the lens and retina located inside, which accelerates aging and causes various eye diseases such as cataracts and pterygium, so special care is needed.

Among them, pterygium grows from the white of the eye close to the nose toward the pupil. This is the part that closes last when the eyes are closed, and is the part where light reflected from the bridge of the nose shines, making it a part that receives stronger light stimulation than other parts.

Director Hong Jun-ki of Gumi Deowon Eye Clinic said, “It is necessary to take care to prevent the occurrence of pterygium, a phenomenon in which a white film forms on the surface of the eye and covers part of the black eye due to ultraviolet rays. “Initially, symptoms such as foreign body sensation, tingling, and redness appear, but as fibrovascular tissue gradually covers the eye, vision may deteriorate and the risk of dry eye syndrome and strabismus increases,” he explained.

He continued, “If foreign body sensation or symptoms of dry eye occur, artificial tears or eye drops should be used, and if the progression speeds up, drug treatment such as vasoconstrictors and steroids should be administered to slow the growth of fibrovascular tissue. “If symptoms worsen, surgical treatment to remove fibrovascular tissue may be considered,” he added.

To prevent pterygium, it is a good idea to protect your eyes from various irritants, especially ultraviolet rays. It is also helpful to avoid going out when it is dry or windy and to wear sunglasses or a hat on hot days with UV rays. Above all, it is a good idea to maintain eye health by checking for eye abnormalities through regular eye examinations.
