Due to the unfavorable situation in other regions, residents of the Volgograd region were warned about the threat of contracting meningitis. According to the regional health committee, a dangerous infectious disease without timely treatment can cause serious and long-term complications. Irina Tekucheva, chief freelance specialist of the regional health department for children’s infectious diseases, spoke about how to protect children from infection and what to do when the first symptoms of meningitis appear.

According to Irina Vladimirovna, the causative agents of meningitis are viruses and bacteria that provoke inflammation of the meninges. The route of transmission of infection is airborne. In some meningitis, the pathogen is transmitted through dirty hands, food, unboiled water.

“The disease is characterized by an acute onset of the course: a sharp increase in temperature, vomiting, headaches, general weakness,” the infectious disease specialist warns. – In some cases, rashes appear on the body of the child. Typical symptoms for young children are: long monotonous crying, bulging of a large fontanel, an acute negative reaction to light and touch.

If you do not seek help from doctors in time, children may develop hearing loss, speech impairment, cognitive decline, structural epilepsy, and persistent paresis.

– The disease develops at lightning speed, – insists Irina Tekucheva, – getting into the blood, the pathogen spreads throughout the body, affecting the organs and systems of the child’s body. Every minute of delay will worsen the prognosis, worsen the course of the disease, up to death. Only a doctor can correctly diagnose the disease and begin treatment!

Hand washing and careful handling of food will help keep your child safe. But due to the high incidence in the regions of Russia, residents of the Volgograd region are asked to further protect themselves.

– It is impossible to completely limit the child’s contacts with strangers, however, I do not recommend taking a small child, and even more so infants, with you to shopping and entertainment centers, supermarkets and cinemas, – says Irina Vladimirovna. “The babies have not yet had time to form their own immunity and have not received all the necessary vaccinations, so the protection of children from viruses and bacteria is too weak. If a person in your environment is sick with meningitis, you should immediately isolate yourself from him and consult a doctor for advice. Depending on the pathogen, vaccination, antibiotic prophylaxis, or other measures may be required.
