No less than 46,000 doses of rabies vaccine will be distributed in the forests of southern Quebec starting Monday due to contamination by American raccoons.
A specimen from Vermont with this disease was recorded in recent days less than 10 kilometers from the Quebec border.
This is what is pushing the Ministry of the Environment to act to prevent the spread of this disease.
Capsules will be placed in the forests of 17 municipalities in Estrie and Montérégie.
Their smell especially attracts animals such as foxes and raccoons, so they eat the vaccine and become immunized.
“It’s worrying in the sense that since it’s been a few years since we’ve had any vaccinations, wild animal populations are practically no longer vaccinated once morest this disease,” explains the person responsible for the file in the Ministry of the Environment and Climate. Quebec, Marianne Gagnier.
“We’re in the open,” she adds. It’s really a matter of protecting human health like rabies, it’s a deadly disease.”
Veterinarian Caroline Kilsdonk indicates that it is strongly recommended to have the pet vaccinated once morest this disease.
“They can come into contact with wild animals more easily than we can,” she says.
